What's Up Wednesday: October Edition (part-1)

Hello Friends,

Happy October! And Happy Hump Day....which means it's time for a What's Up Wednesday. (sign up at Jaime's blog and join us)

What I'm Reading:
I've read so many books since I last posted, so I'll just list a couple highlights:

NIGHT FILM: Wow, what a ride. And also, man, did she get lucky with her publisher, because even the quality of the paper they used to print her book is thick and glossy and lush. (the hardback weighs a ton)

THE BITTER KINGDOM (the final book in Rae Carson's Fire & Thorns trilogy):
What a satisfying ending to this YA fantasy series. I loved all 3 books. Sad it's over.

What I'm Writing:
I'm still tinkering on the pre-writing, the nailing down of of the slippery thing that is my SNI, which will be my Nanowrimo project (and is the SNI I've mentioned before)
(if you want to be buddies on the fun that is Nano, my name on the site is: the-sharp-pen).
I've been doing some free-writing and research and collecting images on my Pinterest Board (called 'Nano Project') for inspiration. And I've made my playlist.

What Inspires Me Right Now:
I always fin this category to be the most difficult, because EVERYTHING inspires me. Leaving the house, travel, taking a walk, nature, movies, hanging out with friends and family, going to museums, art (viewing and creating), music, reading, people-watching, magazines, pinterest, phone conversations with friends, the news, pamphlets, cheering on fellow writers (and them cheering me on)...literally everything.
But, I suppose if you're looking for specifics on this SNI, I'd say the images in the pinterest board I mentioned above inspire me. And this song:

What Else I've Been Up To:
Well, I don't want to talk about the Government Shutdown and how that is has a stranglehold on my family and household. So, moving on.
We've been doing a LOT of college visits because our daughter is a senior in high school. (Holy shiz)
And I've been working on going and cooking mostly vegetarian and organic. Except when I'm snarfing down yummy pumpkin cupcakes with cream cheese frosting....and meatballs. And PopTarts. Okay, I'm mostly failing at it, but I am trying.
And I have my house all decorated and spookified for Halloween.
And I've been reading and critiquing LOTS of fulls lately.

Okay, that's far more than enough about me. Now it's YOUR turn...
What's Up with YOU??

Have a marvelous week! xoxo

Love,
Lola

I've only read the first book in Rae Carson's series. I'm waiting on my local library to acquire the rest of it.

And The One That Got Away is a gorgeous song. Very inspirational.

Best of luck with NaNo!

love the civil wars! they make seriously beautiful music together. I can't believe NaNo is less than a month away. I have to get more prep work done otherwise i won't make it past the first week. Good luck with all the college visits with your daughter!

Yet another reminder that I need to finish reading Rae Carson's series! I've read the first one and have the second one, so I have not good excuse. Mostly I just want more time to read right now! I am so envious of everyone gearing up for NaNo. I've made two attempts at it and was not overly successful, so I was thinking this year might be the year. Moving has really put a kink in that plan. Ah well. Your list of things that inspire you is awesome! I hope you have a wonderful week, Lola! :-)

Ahh, I must read Night Film! I've heard such good things. And that song is hauntingly beautiful. Sounds like you're going to have a fun NaNo project!

Great idea to use Pinterest for story inspiration; I've seen writers do this but I've been pretty lax about it myself. I am probably doing Nano again this year, I just got an email from my local group--they meet at libraries near me but I've never met up with them. I'll look for you to "Friend" you on the Nano boards!

Oooh! I still need to read THE BITTER KINGDOM--I've read and enjoyed the first 2 in the series (and usually I don't "do" series). :) Good luck nailing down that slippery SNI!!

Glad you are keeping all organic and pop tarty! :-) What is an SNI? Whatever it is - wishing all the best for Nano! Can't believe it's been nearly a year since the last one! Yikes!!

I really wanted to do Nano this year but I am so busy already that I figured I better give it a miss. Hope it goes well for you though :)

I have got to read the next two in TGOFAT series! I can't believe I'm so far behind! The library has a copy of THE BITTER KINGDOM and it was a nice kick in the butt, reminding me that I MUST READ THE SECOND ONE.

*ahem*

And I can't believe you have a senior. I have trouble dealing with the fact that my daughter's a freshman.

Everyone talking about Nano has my wheels turning - I REALLY want to write something then, but I know I will be immersed in revisions and not at a place to work on something else. Maybe by January. Good luck to you! Can't wait to hear more about this SNI!

I love all the planning and prepping you've been doing for NaNo, Lola. I'm going to have to sit out this year. I'm hoping to finish my WiP's first draft this month, then work on some revising in November. And I'm impressed with your efforts to cook healthy meals. I do that too, mostly so I can enjoy the tasty snacks you mentioned without too much guilt. :-) Have a great week!

I can't wait to do NaNoWriMo next month too. Oh, Night Film looks so good. I love how Pessl incorporated a lot of different mediums in it. I loved her Youtube videos. I can't wait to read it, it's in my TBR pile that's growing by the day. Have a great weekend!

Busy Lola is busy, but yay for the SNI! Is this the one we talked about or a different one? Also, it's awesome that you might do it for NaNoWriMo. I was iffy on if I'd join this year, but I'm starting to get ideas on an old premise... So maybe I'll do NaNo after all.

Bah for the Govt Shutdown, but I'm glad things seem to be moving along for the SNI and yay for trying to eat more healthy & for college visits. I remember those being so fun - nervous and exciting! And yay for the good reads. Good books always make things better.

Wow - your NaNo prep has me inspired! I love that you made a Pinterest board and song list, what great ideas.

Kudos on trying to eat more veg! That's awesome. Even a little progress is progress, right?

Have a great week, and good luck with your NaNo prep!

My name is Lola. (I'm not a showgirl) Yes, L-O-L-A Lola. It's the least of my worries. Let's move on, shall we? This blog is mostly about my misadventures on the journey to publication and beyond. My passion for lush prose, quirky characters, art, music, literature, performing arts and anything creative will be a major theme here. This journey of mine will not always be pretty. Much like rubbernecking a train wreck, I know sometimes you just can't help but look at the carnage that is often my life. So strap on your neck brace, helmet and 5-point harness and come along for the ride! Licentia poetica.
