Castles and Wands and Pixie Dust and Magic ☆∴*★∵∶。◦°✰*¨*•.¸¸✩

Hello Friends!

How are you?
I hope this finds you happy and healthy.

So many random things inside my head this fine morning:

1.) Pottermore. I'm intrigued. JK Rowling made the big announcement. Did you catch it? Watch her video here:

2) Which segues me nicely to...Husband, Daughter and I will be leaving this weekend (for two weeks!) to visit this:

Harry Potter World HERE WE COME! Butterbeer!
And we're having dinner INSIDE this for 4th of July:

We'll be staying at Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter this time.

Usually we stay at the Polynesian, but since I couldn't be in New Orleans for ALA this year (because we'll be in Diz) I thought this way I could still sorta be there (Disney knows how to do a theme, because it really has a french quarter/NOLA feel to it)...plus, they make/serve beignets! So I can still get my fix. :)
One of the places at our hotel where I'll be getting my beignets next week!

3) Due to the above mentioned vacation, I will not be blogging until middle/late  July.
BUT, I will be around on The Twitter. (*pets twitter* *pets smart phone*) In between packing and getting our house/pet sitter settled and in between park visits, I am sure to pop-in on twitter to say hello, see what y'all are up to, and how the world outside The World is faring.

And *possibly* tweet humiliating pictures of Husband's (and/or Daughter's) Face of Terror whilst riding this:

and this...

I LOVE Aerosmith's  Rockin' Rollercoaster!

or perhaps this:

4) ERIC!!! I've missed you so! *drools*

I'm over the moon that True Blood is (almost) back.

(and sad that we have to wait a YEAR for more Game of Thrones)

5) I've been busy writing a new WiP. I needed a break from revisions on the last two WiPs.
I want this pink typewriter.

I know some of you love revisions and edits more than drafting. I find revisions...stressful. Part of the reason they're stressful is that I'm a perfectionist and I fester fester fester over every detail, large and small.

Whereas I adore drafting. I allow myself to just flow and follow the characters, immersing myself in their world. I don't worry about plot holes or getting things perfect during that magical first draft. (of course this leads to my hellish revisions)
And, in truth, I don't mind the 2nd draft where I close up the big holes and tie the major strings together, adding layers and tidying a bit as I go...until I decide I have to rip large chunks out and have to rewrite a dreaded middle chapter (or two or three) over (and over) again.

Somewhere around the fifth draft I'm in the deepest level of Revision Hell, ready to torch the damn thing and do a tribal death dance upon its ashes.

That's about when the melodious siren song of a Shiny New Idea (SNI) finally lures me away.

And, truth be told, that's a good thing. It gives me some needed time and distance. When I finish a first draft of a project, I go back to a project that needs polishing...with fresh eyes. Where I commence the festering and ripping apart all over again. ;)

That's my process, though. It's slow, sometimes painfully so, this process of mine, but I love it. Usually. Sometimes.

5) So, tell me...

What's YOUR writing/drafting/revision process?

What are your summer plans?

Are you going on any vacations?

Know this: I love you. I love you for being my friend, for loving words and creating worlds and for understanding why I love words and creating worlds.

Thanks for being in THIS world. *hugs*

Love,

Lola

I'm almost ready to get past the 1st draft, so we'll see how I fare with the revisions. Thanks for the Pottermore news. I don't think I'll have time to participate, but it would be fun to observe.

Wow, I bet the Disney FQ smells much better than the real FQ. ;)

Hope you have fun, and relax!

Ugh, you don't even want to hear about my writing progress, but it does help me to work on two projects at once if I'm getting stuck on one, or sick of revising.

I'm still revising Evangeline for another week, and I'm working on the first draft of my as-yet-untitled-aetherpunk-western. When I get stuck on one, I work on the other. It actually helps me to feel like I'm not tied down to one project.

But I don't work on two novels in the same stage at the same time. No starting a new first draft while I've already got a wip. And if I were revising two novels at once, I'd probably die. :)

Are you guys driving to HPW? If so, you should totally wave at me when you drive through Georgia. I'll probably be pressure-washing the house or something. :)

You know I haven't been to Disney World since 1991? I think it was then. All I know is that Splash Mountain was still in testing phase.

I was seriously underwhelmed by the Pottermore thing. I think my exact thought was, "big f*ing deal." I liked the books and the movies, but that's where I end. I'm not much of a rabid fan of anything, really, except maybe food. :)

I've been almost physically missing writing. You know I thought I'd have all this time this summer to revise Four, and then the move happened. I'm happy, believe me, but I miss my world. I've been thinking a lot still, so that counts, but I'm ready for the words to flow.

In good news, the place is almost unpacked and ready for picture. :)

like summer, i was bummed by Pottermore. I was really hoping for an MMORPG so when it sounded like it's just mostly another way to read the books i was peeved. I own the books, i can read them whenever i want. But we'll see. it's still early.
But OH MAN! i want to hit up hogwarts!
As for vacays, we're doing a family staycay, which will involve daily fun like the zoo, casino, comedy club, theater (not movie), amusement park, miniature golf, boating and fun!

I guess I'm alone, but I thought PotterMore sounded like a really nifty idea. People communing together over books? What could be more awesome? :)
Summer's looking pretty good though, and I'm excited. I have no idea what's going to happen overall, but today I'm going to a bookstore, and that's more than good enough. :)

I've just got to say, I'm sooo jealous of your summer plans! That looks like so much fun! I'm going to the Oregon coast for a writer's workshop next month and can hardly wait. Best of luck with your shiny new idea! I've found getting a bit of distance between me and my WIP is the best thing for both of us. ;)

What a lovely last paragraph Lola!

My writing/drafting/revision process is quite straight forward -

1. Write down whatever nonsense/ reality is in my head.
2. Slice it all into big paragraphs.
3. Sprinkle lightly with magic dust and see what's left!!

Or something similar!

And have a lovely break as you deserve it to! That castle looks fab!!

Oooooh, what a great vacation you have planned! Do you ride the coasters? We have two weeks planned in Oregon/Washington - headed to the mountains for lots of hiking and restoring our souls with nature. I can almost smell the pine and hear the river rushing. It's not until August, though. Have FUN at Diz!

I think Pottermore sounds pretty nifty. :)

Have fun on your vacation -- that sounds even niftier!

I'm so jealous of your vacation~

I probably won't be going on any vacations T_T but, my summer will at least include spending time in my WIP. Sorta vacation I suppose?

Have tons of fun!

Jemi Fraser said...

SO JEALOUS!!! I've never been to Disney... :( But, I hope you have the bestest time anyway! :)

I love, love, love 1st draft writing. I could do it forever and be happy. So many good stories - so little time!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Do the Tower of Terror - it's awesome! And I'm curious about the changes at Islands of Adventure since they turned the Lost Continent into Potterworld.

Carol Riggs said...

Awesome stuff here! Thanks for the link to Pottermore; I'd been wondering what that was. Ha!--cute pink typewriter. Why do they always make computers in black and gray, anyway??

LOL, your tribal death dance over the fifth draft of revision. Yep, distance is a good thing. I've about beaten my novel to DEATH. Need. A. Break!!! I need to enjoy summer before it's gone!

Shelley Sly said...

Lola, I hope you and your family have the most flippin' AMAZING time in Disney World (lucky) and at "Hogwarts" (totally jealous... you need to tell us all about it!!) You deserve a wonderful vacation, and I hope you enjoy every second of it!

I'm not going on vacation this summer because I just got back from a week in Vegas. It was phenomenal.

Talk to you when you return... or perhaps on Twitter. Safe travels! <3

The last time we did Disney, we stayed at the Contemporary, but that's been years ago. I always thought the Polynesian looked great.

I'd KILL to go to the WWofHP. Have fun and take lots of pictures!

Carla White said...

Have fun at Disney! Jealous that you're going to Harry Potter World, that's going to be awesome! This is definitely more than any vacations I have planned this summer. Just some weekends at the cottage readin' and relaxin'... gotta save up for my brother's wedding in England in January.

Enjoy the vacay!

Great post thx for sharing your story and pics.

I am working through the second draft of my WIP... I love the first draft. When I composer its not me, its more than I could ever accomplish in my normal state. On revision I come back to earth and see what I really am, it is slow and painful to get through, but I am learning and growing.

For the summer: I am going to write and keep on writing.

Vacation: if I complete me book, I’ll figure something out.

I too am curious about Pottermore - interesting video. Have a great trip- sounds awesome!

Have a great vacation!

I'm currently in final manuscript tidy-up mode. And yesterday, I found an error that will force a bit of a rewrite. I'm ready to pull out my hair and scream. I'm so ready for this to be done!

Have a Grand Vacation!

Meredith said...

You're going to have such an awesome vacation!!! And I'm totally the same way about revisions: I need to take breaks between rounds so that I can come back with fresh eyes. Everything just blurs together if I don't. Good luck with the SNI!

Susanne Drazic said...

Have a wonderful time!

Theresa Milstein said...

I had higher hopes for the Pottermore announcement, like another book. Oh well!

Have a fun vacation! I want to go there so badly.

Good luck with revisions. I go through mine a few times, including a read aloud. When I feel like it's tight, I send it to readers. One of my readers has sent me suggestions. The other sent me some, but needs to finish. I'll go through those suggestions, and edit some more. Then I'll do another read aloud. And then (hopefully) a final reader will look through it.

I have a fierce kind of Eric love. So much so that I REFUSED to buy latest Sookie book based on spoilers. I will bask in the "wedding" book forever and not go on. Sigh. Eric.
Also, super jealous of fun vacay. You are going to have such a great time. I will continue to Tweet stalk. Don't forget pics.
Finally, I have drafted two books without completing revisions now. I too find them stressful. Drafting is fun, revisions are hard. Keep at it, Lola.

Lola, I was gutted when the first season of Game of Thrones finished. And Karl Drogo! Oh my word! And Ned! Oh my word!

Have fun at Disneyworld. Hogwarts looks soooo cool and I bet you guys are going to have tons of fun.

I'm excited about Pottermore! Heard about it yesterday. We can never have enough Potter.

Have a wonderful vacation! We're spending a few weeks with extended family, but nothing big like Disney. I've heard the Harry Potter park is fantastic!

I'm jealous, and you have good taste in typewriters. Have fun on your vacation!

Abby Minard said...

I'm so jealous you'll be at Disney World for 2 weeks! Are you going to Leakycon? Lisa Galek is, and I'm really jealous about that too!! Have fun! And yeah, I hate revisions. So tedious!! I need breaks in between or else I'll go crazy.

Jamie Burch said...

Hope you are having a magical time and enjoying every second! Sounds amazing, Lola.

How could I not open a post with a title like this??

What fun summer plans! We are going to Hogwarts in August. Yay!

I'm with you on revising. I love first drafts; I worry about nothing. But serious editing is so dreadful. Good luck finishing yours!

alexia said...

Oh, and I love TB, too! And Game of Thrones...

Have a great 4th!

I hope you're having a wonderful time.

I didn't know Disney had French Quarters.

I went to ALA and fell in love with New Orleans. I want to go again.

That pink typewriter is so cute, but of course I wouldn't use it. I remember my manual typewriter, which was turquoise. It was cute, but so hard to type on.

Take care. :)

Carolina Valdez Miller said...

Ohhhhhh, so very exciting!! I wish I could be there with you!! I hope you're having a fabulous time. Well, I know you are--but I hope you continue having a fabulous time. And I hope the weather cools off a bit for you, too.

Miss you!

I'm actually finding that I love revisions because I love seeing my story improve.

Still, I can imagine that it can be hell for people with different approaches.

Enjoy your vacation!

I hope you're having a great time on your vacation! What better way to celebrate J.K. Rowling's Pottermore announcement than to go visit Harry Potter World. Drink some Butterbeer for me ;)

Have an awesome trip, Lola! We just got back from L'Ile Porquerolle, a small island in the Med off France – easy to get to for me. And my parents/sister are coming to France mid-August. We'' be taking them all over when they're here. Lots to see.

As for my process. I do things ass-backwards. I'm constantly revising. And writing. And revising.

Simon C. Larter said...

My writing process? Well, let's see....

First, I start drinking. Then I open a Word document. Then I start typing, with breaks every few words to check Twitter and Facebook and email and chat and such. Rinse, repeat.

And the next morning I wake up and some fiction's apparently appeared on my computer.

>.>

Hope you and the fam have a lovely time at Disney, good lady. See you when you get back! :D
