♪The Impossible Task ♫

Insane silly little panda that I am, I signed up to support my friend Alex's Top 10 Songs Blogfest. What was I thinking??
I suppose I  was thinking (<--first sign of trouble) that I like Alex and I LOVE music, so easy squeezy lemon freezy, right?
Why why WHY would I do this to myself? Creating a list of only 10 songs...or even 10 bands/artists is sending me into the crazed cuckoo-nest-zone...somebody bring on the shock equipment. *twitch*

I mean, 'best songs' depend on mood, time and place, activity...what I like to drive to may be different than what I like to listen to while eating or dancing or making love or writing or...

One cannot take or make a top list of songs lightly. It's Sophie's Choice up in here!

Oh, the pressure.

There have been a lot of truly brilliant songs, inspired albums, gifted artists, musicians and song writers.
To narrow things down a little and save some of my meager sanity, I've decided not to allow any classical or instrumental jazz music into my list.

But still, I'm losing my shizz.

Thus, I am going to cheat a teensy tiny bit. (It's either that or I shall perish. Please forgive me)

Behold Lola's The Impossibly Incomplete Top *mumbles number more than 10* Music Artists/Bands:

  10-ish) David Bowie
  10-b) Bob Marley
   9) The Clash
   8) The Kinks
   7) Led Zeppelin
   6) Nine Inch Nails (Trent is one whacky genius and 'Hurt" is one of my favorite songs EVER.  Even J. Cash loved it enough to record it)
   6b) Jeff Buckley
   5) Patti Smith
   4) The Rolling Stones
   3) The Police
   2) Radiohead
   2b) Jay-Z
   2c) Nirvana
2d) Peter Gabriel (In Your Eyes still makes me swoon)
   1) Depeche Mode

Honorable Mentions: U2, The Cure, Tom Waits, Prince, Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Soundgarden, Modest Mouse, Talking Heads, Incubus, MCR, Johnny Cash, Nina Simone, Etta, BB King, ACDC, Run DMC, Kanye, Eric Clapton, Queen, Cheap Trick, Rush, the Smiths, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Zero7, Regina Spektor, Gaga ...I could go on FOREVER.

The 'soundtrack' to the movie Once by Glen Hansard and Marketa Inglova is haunting and lovely and will stand the test of time.

What music do you love? Do you write to music?

Okay, don't forget to wang chung tonight under your umbrella ella ella eh eh eh. Also, if you met her in a club down in old SoHo, it wasn't me.

Clarissa Draper said...

I know! It's so hard to narrow it down. I'm sure I'll be saying "oh, yeah, that's a great song" while I view the entries.

Kari Marie said...

I love that you couldn't narrow this down. I think I'd have the same problem. It's like asking me to pick only 10 books to bring on a desert island.

PS: In your eyes makes me swoon too!

Tricia J. O'Brien said...

Oh, you got me with Jeff Buckley (Last Goodbye; Lover, You Should Have Come Over;Forget Her----I could go on and on!)and the Once soundtrack. I could listen to both of those forever.

Arlee Bird said...

These top 10 lists are difficult. I'd have a hard time picking just the 10 top ten songs by certain artists.

Tossing It Out

JEM said...

This post had me cracking up because you so clearly cheated the top 10 rule. Having said that, I would never limit myself to 10. I yell at people for asking desert island top five records questions. Why would I want to IMAGINE such a world?

Old Kitty said...

Yay Depeche Mode!!

AWwww it's a brilliant but impossible task to to narrow down but you;ve done well here!! Yay!!!

Enjoy your music!!!! I now have that umbrella- ella eh eh eh going round my head, but darn it - it's so catchy!!! thank you!
Take care

Melissa said...

I didn't enter this blogfest (even though Alex IS awesome) because I knew I'd never be able to narrow it down. I have way too much music that I love WAY too much.

I commend you for the narrowing you did!

Also, you have some great artists on that list!

Jim Murdoch said...

When my wife and I were just getting to know each other we tried this, making list of our Top Ten books, films, music and so on. I could never get my lists down to any less than about thirty – I’d probably want t include about five Pink Floyd albums just to start. I always write to music but rarely vocal music these days because I find it harder than I used to to write over words but I have an enormous collection of classical music and film soundtracks. At the moment I’m listening to a piano transcription of the soundtrack to The Hours by Philip Glass which would never be out of my all-time favourite pieces of music; it is truly astounding. My problem with music is that my tastes are extremely broad. There’s not much I can’t appreciate and as soon as I say I don’t like something (like rap music) I can think of an exception like Blondie’s ‘Rapture’. I say I don’t like opera but who doesn’t love ‘Nessun dorma’?

B.E. Sanderson said...

Good job narrowing it down as far as you did. I'd never be able to make a top ten of songs - unless I could do ten favs for each mood (or each manuscript I'm working on).

salarsenッ said...

I felt that pressure, too. I knew I'd forget one of my favs. You've just proved it. I am a total Zep-girl. Yup, I forgot all about adding them to my list. Grrr....

It's hard to choose. Great list, though.

Jessica Bell said...

Oh man, we got similar tastes!
9) The Clash
6) Nine Inch Nails
6b) The Kinks
5) Patti Smith
4) The Rolling Stones
2) Radiohead
2c) Nirvana

Becky Taylor said...

It's nice to see I'm not the only one with music tastes all over the board. I'm a Bach to Britney, country to rap, kind of girl

Bish Denham said...

I doubt I could ever narrow it down to ten. The Beatles, Shawn Phillips, The Doors and Zeppelin would have to be there along with several hundred others. :)

aspiring_x said...

i KNOW! so impossible! great list of artists! :)
i can't believe i forgot nirvana!

Lisa said...

What timing! I've been rebuilding playlists after a computer crash that took my iTunes and stomped on it. On the one hand it's a hassle and on the other, it's a great opportunity to revisit lots of great music.

Lately? Argentinian Tangos and Edith Piaf. And Damien Rice. I don't know. It just is.

Jules said...

I do sympathize with you, I picked songs that represent things/genre. Oh but honorable mention for Etta? My all time favorite female voice.
Great list :)

Elisabeth Black said...

Awesome, ha! Very nice eclectic list. I think you're right - "favorite" is such a relative term.

Adriana Noir said...

Your taste ranges as wide as mine does! Nice to see I'm not the only one all over the radio dial! Great choices, too! Buckley is amazing!

iZombie said...

at least we have the music, every artist is awesome... hard to pick,l like a guitar...

what a great selection of music
thanks for the melody's,

AlexOngNYC said...

I totally had to self-edit or my Top 10 would've turned into a Top 100!

Jamie Burch said...

Ha ha! I love your list, Lola! You totally made it work for you.

Paul Greci said...

Loved seeing Bob Marley on your list. I listen to him while getting ready to go running!!

Carol Kilgore said...

Oh, yeah. I love all of these. I've said that a lot this morning as I've roamed from blog to blog. I didn't participate, but I did blog about music. This is the first Bob Marley I seen. Dreadlocked Rascal :)

Ellie said...

You are right - it was impossible to choose ten. Got to love your list, especially with Bowie in it! Thanks for sharing.

Thus my decision to not even try. :)

I like your list though!!

Carolyn V. said...

So many good ones! You're the first one I saw with Bowie on the list! Yay! I love the Bowie. =D

Haleine said...

Love your list!!

I had to cheat too. I posted thirty of my favorite songs and tomorrow shall probably post a few more.

LTM said...

LOL! Great post. I think this is how I would've had to handle this fest, too. Too many great songs from which to choose!!!

but I can't write with music playing. I have to listen~ :D <3

Tara said...

I know, how freaking hard was this?! I could have gone on for days. You have quite a few that were on my short list that didn't make the final cut.

Hart Johnson said...

I would be a very happy camper to hang out with you on music patrol. I pretty much love everything you've listed up there...

Colene Murphy said...

Wow! Amazing list!!! You did an awesome job considering you were so skeptical about doing it! (I did not have the guts ;)

Lydia K said...

We have so many in common! I had such a hard time choosing. I should have made an honorable mention list!

Wendy Tyler Ryan said...

I know how you feel. My top 10 are only the tip of the ice-berg.

Linda G. said...

Great list! I commend you on your cheating ability. :)

Heather said...

I love your eclectic list! Many of those would make it onto my top 10 list! I think I could totally do a road trip with you.

Nicki Elson said...

Well, at least you cheated creatively so I hardly even noticed. Good stuff here & we've got some overlap. :)

Sarah Ahiers (Falen) said...

oh man, Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" is so fricking awesome. SO SO SO awesome!
ANd yes, In your eyes is an epic song.
Great list

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

I know - it was tough! But you did it.
That's a great Gabriel song as well.
Thanks for participating.

Meredith said...

Mmm, Jeff Buckley. Perfect Sunday morning music. Perfect anytime music, actually :)

Okie said...

Great list. I've got to agree that I would find it difficult, nigh impossible, to properly narrow down a list of music to a Top 10.

My love of a song is too often determined largely by what's going on in my life/emotions at that moment. There are some that are always tops...but the general reception fluctuates.

Lindsay (a.k.a Isabella) said...

I love that you couldn't narrow it down I'd have a hard time too. Great list though.

I love Queen, Muse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paramore... so many more. It's hard to choose.

M Pax said...

It was hard to choose. I love listening to many of the bands and songs you selected.

Lola Sharp said...

I'm trying very hard to get around to all of those in the's gonna take me a couple days. There're a LOT of you. :)

Ciara said...

I love anything by The Police. I'm a huge Sting fan.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I just followed yours. :)

Kelly said...

I know! This was crazy hard! I love SO many songs and bands, I felt so bad to narrow them down.
I knew you'd have a great list. Out of yours, my faves are NIN, MCR and Incubus and I love the song "in Your Eyes" too. Very nostalgic...high school days!

Budd said...

once was a great movie and I absolutely loved the music.

Jai Joshi said...

I love Radiohead too!

Pk Hrezo said...

LOL... Wang chung, sista! Love me some NIN! Great selection!

Hannah Kincade said...

Hurt was part of my NaNo soundtrack. LOVE IT! I love pretty much everyone on your list. I'm glad Tom Waits got in there somewhere. :)

Liz Pezzuto said...

Lots of good bands! Great list!

Jemi Fraser said...

Girl - I LOVE the way you cheat!!! This is the first time I didn't... and now I wish I had!! You've got some awesome names on that list! :)

VR Barkowski said...

Oh, nice fudge on the rules and fab list! I still can't believe Bob Marley's Redemption Song off my list.

Jennie Bailey said...

I love the b, c, d. You're so clever, Lola!! Fabulous music, but I'm not the least bit surprised. Of course, YOU would have great taste in music! :-)

James Garcia Jr said...

Come down off that ledge, Lola, my friend! I know exactly what you mean. I totally took longer putting together my list than some articles that I have written. Anyway, as long as you didn't forget to list Zeppelin you were going to be okay. ;)

Carolina Valdez Miller said...

Dude, your cheating ways are inspiring! ;) Great choices!! Love that you've included Run DMC. and the honorable mentions are quite honorable--and ecclectic! Just so you know, every time I hear "In your Eyes" I also hear in my head, "In your [insert body part]." Sorry. That's just the way it is. I know. I'm juvenile.

Also, I don't write to music. I get too distracted, but I often come up with ideas while listening to it. Wish I could write to music though. Seems so romantic.

Hanny said...

Aaahh! A picture of a burning Gibson Les Paul!

Draven Ames said...

There are so many people, I just don't think I could narrow it down. Music is all good. Like art, the value is in the meaning we give it.

Kind of like money.

L. Diane Wolfe said...

The Kinks! Living on a Thin Line was always my favorite.
Won't even mention Lola...

Paul Joseph said...

Wow! Not one choice I could disagree with. Now that is impressive!!!

Jeff King said...

I love music... but don't delve into to it that deep to come up with a definite top ten.

I write to music; sometimes, it all depends on my mood.

Anonymous said...

I love so many of the artists on your list, there's no way I could choose a favorite!

Christopher S. Ledbetter said...

Loved this list. We overlap a bit.

~Nicole Ducleroir~ said...

Nine Inch Nails ROCK!! One of my all-time favorite bands and the providers of the soundtrack to the chapter of my life when I lived in Washington D.C.

Great lists!!

Psst...I'm hosting a blogfest (I know, you just did one! But this is easy-peesy...) just announced today. Stop over if you get a sec!

((hugs)) Nicole

Elaine AM Smith said...

That's the answer to this impossible task. You narrowed it down to lots.

Good music!

Ann said...

Didn't sign up for this one because I felt it was an impossible task. As you say, different favorite for different moods and activates. Still enjoyed reading your list. Many of my favorites on it.

Karen Peterson said...

It really IS an impossible task!

Lynda Young said...

Yay for Depeche Mode!! And Peter Gabriel of course :)

Lola Sharp said...

Elaine, yeah, I cheated. ;)

Everyone, I'm STILL trying to visit everyone. I will get to you.

Terresa said...

The Police, Peter Gabriel, Depeche Mode, love them, mmm.

Anonymous said...

Music is everything. I agree with Glen Hansard and Marketa--that movie/soundtrack is ridiculous. Did you see when they won the Oscar for best song? I bawled.

alexia said...

I love your list, too! Really good stuff here. It is super hard to narrow it down.

Deniz Bevan said...

I know how you feel! I couldn't narrow mine down at all - and I see that we overlap in a lot of bands [g]

Gina Blechman said...

I completely understand your dilemma. This is something I am never able to do. You should see my profile page--I have a list of like 30 musical artists.

Because you asked, I do write music and I sing and play guitar. Music is about equal with writing as far as the things that I need to survive.

I hope you have a lovely day!
