More Random Bits, Lola-style

1) Hello lovely friends!

It's almost Halloween! And Nano-time! *•♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸

2) Before you ask...yes. YES, I am still STILL waist deep in Revision Hell. This is because a] I don't outline and b] I am a perfectionist.

But, I did have a breakthrough in the bathtub last night, which I *think* will solve my last little glitch. I don't know why, but...
I feel a little less like I'm slogging with this dude...
Aw. I  kinda think Swamp Thing here is cute-ish smelling the flower.
And more like I'm  swimming in the muck with this guy...

Where do you suppose his 'package' is??
When I finish revisions on this WiP and hand it off to my CPs (#LoveMyCPs!) I'll be out of the murky depths of RH and imagining myself spending a little quality time with...

OMG (shallow Lola alert) Cam is looking tasty. (#omnomnom)

3) How about more Sausage Chickens, er, Savage Chickens humor this week...
4) I'm excited about the Rocky Horror Glee Show!... just a jump to the left, and a step to the right...

5) Most of you know I will be doing Nano again this year...

so I thought I might give you a few tips (I won't talk outlining, because we all know that's NOT my creative style).

Lola's Nano Preparation Tips:

a} Do a HUGE grocery shop this weekend. STOCK UP. (3 dozen eggs, check. 5 loaves of bread, check...) Stock up and utilize your freezer. If you are in charge of feeding a family, find some super easy crock pot recipes and stock up on those ingredients as well.

a2} Stock up on your writing beverage of choice. Buy WAY more than a month's supply.

b} Have the local pizza (etc.) delivery on speed dial.

c} Get spouse/family/friends on board. You will need their support. (My Husband knows how to shove food under my writing cave door.) If you're married with children, get spouse to bring home dinners and help extra with the kids. (if you have little ones home with you, buy some new little toys, movies, books, crayons, etc. and whip them out when you need some quiet time. Consider hiring a teen/senior helper to play with them outside.)

Friends and family need to know that unless their hair is on fire, to please cheer you on from a silent distance (aka leave you alone); chatty visits, phone calls/texts etc. will have to wait until December. You will be sequestered, MIA.

c2} Spouse should be pre-warned that it is possible (likely) your personal hygiene and grooming will decline substantially during the month of November.
(*sniff* do I reek? Yes? *rubs on more deodorant, shrugs, goes back to typing*) (where's that scrunchy that isn't all stretched out?) Get your hair cut/colored NOW, pre-Nov., or be prepared to wait until Dec. 1st.

d} Preemptively CLEAN YOUR HOUSE (and do all laundry) like a mad person this weekend. Then every few days during Nov. try to zip through and whirl-wind clean the hot spots (kitchen, toilets, quick vacuum). If you live with someone, try to enlist their help to do more than their share and you'll make it up to them another month. DO NOT LET ANYONE OVER in November. The house will not be up to company standards. Which leads me to...

e} DO NOT HAVE THANKSGIVING (for those living in the States) at your house this year!! Go to your parents/in-laws/siblings/friends/restaurant. The amount of time it takes to clean for company, plan your menu, shop for the menu, cook, entertain, and then clean afterwards is death to your goal... not an option.

f } I make it my goal to write 2,000 words/day 6 days/week. The 7th day is for errands and spending time with loved ones...preferably outside, in the fresh air and sunlight. If I know I won't be making my goal (like Thanksgiving day, for instance), I 'bank' extra word count AHEAD of time. I will do 2,500-3,000/day for a few days before the day off. I try to do this a few times early in the month to have some 'savings in the bank' for a 'rainy day', in case I get sick or something unexpected comes up. I mean, if I get a last minute invite to front row at Incubus/Kings of Leon, etc., I'm not gonna say no. Duh. I'm gonna ditch that ms like 4 day old stanky fish. So bank as many extra words each day as you can.

I'll try to do a few more Nano tips as we get closer. (if I have time. I'm still trying to get through these revisions.)
You can Buddy me at: the-sharp-pen

6) Some very generous and kind bloggers have recently given be awards.✩♡✩

Many of them are new to the blogging world, so please give them a visit and say hello

THANK YOU, sweet friends, for the many, varied awards. I'm honored.
In return, I award all of YOU with the above award. My awards are guilt-free, no pressure, no rules.

Because you know what I think of (most) rules?

Yeah.

7) Quinn this is for you, in homage to your Halloween costume:
*shudder* CREEPS me out.

8) And I leave you with...
and...
and...
please forgive any sloppy typos/lack of clarity. I have not read through this post, I'm tired, it's late, Blogger is being buggy and doing weird formatting things that it won't let me fix, and there were a lot of links.

and...

Are YOU doing Nano?
Do you have a Nano WiP Title yet? Nano-Playlist? Nano-tips?
If so, please share in the comments.
(and, no, I don't have a title...but you know that. Remember your supreme jealousy over the sexy working title 'WiP 3' on my current WiP? Yeah. That's still the 'title'. *sigh* The perfect title will hit me eventually.)
How is your writing going?

Love,
Lola

I'm not doing Nano but your list is motivating me to FINALLY finish that WIP. I love all of your random tidbits :)

Good luck on revisions and NaNo! Your posts always make me smile. I just love the way you blog!

Emy Shin (Sandy) said...

I'm also doing NaNo this year (I've buddied you, I believe), and am making a valiant effort to outline. And those are some really, really great advice! :)

Hi Lola, I only remember 'nano, nano' by Robin Williams...
It looks like we have a couple of things in common; I'm a perfectionist too, and I hate it sometimes because it means taking sooo looong to complete stuff (I think your second a to b drawing is very funny :); very frequently my inspiration comes when I'm taking a shower;
Don't forget some herbal tea with your grocery, you may need it :)
Btw that hunk, your boyfriend?

Christopher said...

being an unorganized perfectionist sucks doesn't it? great tips by the way, still debating whether I want to give it a try.

Neurotic Workaholic said...

I love this post, and I love the pictures too (especially the ones of the cute guys, tee hee). Great tips for NanoWrimo. I've always wanted to do it, but November is an especially busy month during the school year, and I get extremely neurotic when I'm overworked; I figure it's probably best for everyone if I don't take on NanoWrimo this time around. But maybe next year...

That photo is creepy ... I love it. I wonder how she (it looks like a woman) does anything. Those nails are even longer than mine and I have trouble. I actually got my nails as long as possible; normal salons and normal people can't get that length :(

And in response to your comment on my blog ... it's difficult.

Thanks for the award :)

Old Kitty said...

That photo no. 7 is well creepy!! But so Halloween!!

Awww good luck with your Nano and your editing!! Great tips on how to survive - 5 loaves of bread and getting your family to shove food under your writer cave door is a good plan! LOL!!!

Congratulations with your beautiful award!!! I hope you have lots of breaks wrestling with Cam. Phew.

Your way from A to B is far more interesting than the straight line!
:-)

Take care
x

love all the picture story-telling in this post! :)

this also made me realize how much dedication nanowrite takes!!! i was planning on doing it... but i am having guests from out of town stay in our studio apartment for two weeks!!

i am started to comtemplate all of my options now....

Will Burke said...

I'm finally NaNo-ing this year! I've got you buddied, and I'll see you soon!

Lindsay (a.k.a Isabella) said...

I'm doing my first NaNo this year. Eep. I guess I need to warn my family and friends they won't see me much in November. lol.

I'll buddy you as well. I'm under Lindsay_adventuresinwriting

I'm not doing NaNo this year, but I do love your prep list. Best of luck to you! :)

B. H. Morrigan said...

I'm NaNoing for the first time this year. I'm trying the outline thing, but I usually don't use them either.

I think I'll make my husband read this post so he knows what to expect for the next month. :)

I'll buddy you today! I'm under morgan_le_fay (didn't mean to rhyme that, but oh well!).

Lisa said...

I'm racing to finish some revisions, but have succumbed to the siren song of my NaNo idea. I'm outlining and doing interviews with my main characters. This is so not like me. Will it work? Not a clue.

Your tips are great! I've neglected to prep my family so I better get busy with that, too.

Laurel said...

I will be querying while everyone else is NaNo-ing. Though I might use the blogosphere quiet to attempt a half NaNo (kinda like a half marathon--25K instead of 50k) because the whole deal would only encourage my bad overwriting habit, and I'm trying to write leaner from the git-go.

Summer said...

Evan's an old pro at handling me during NaNo now, so that's good. I've been doing some cleaning in preparation, but I'll haul out the big guns this weekend!

Of course, I have to have some dental work done on the second day in, so that sucks. But maybe writing under the influence will be good...

Falen (Sarah Ahiers) said...

This post was so full of wins, but here were my 2 favorites -
the Easy Way, vs My way made me LMAO
Also, those creepy long fingernails on that chest were so awesome. i LOVE that picture!

I just have too much on my plate to do Nano. But good luck to you, you have some great (burp!) tips!
Fun pics!

Meredith said...

Haha, the mermaid picture cracks me up! Good luck with revisions and NaNo and all that amazing stuff you have going on :)

Jen Chandler said...

I'll be enjoying the madness right along with you (signed up as JChandler).

Good luck with those revisions :) I love your tips...and the guy hooked up to a caffiene drip. Can I get two of those?

Cheers,
Jen

Deffos not doing NaNo, I learned my lesson last year. I am, ironically, planning to finish up the novel I started for NaNo last year by Thanksgiving this year. It only took me a couple extra months and another WIP in between to do it!
Guten luck to you, my friend, on all things revision and NaNo related!

Tere Kirkland said...

Have fun with NaNo, and good luck on your revisions. I'm trying to finish up a wip, so I'll most likely be spending most of MY time in the bathtub, LOL! That's where I have the best ideas, too. ;)

Happy Halloween!

XOXO
Tere

Oh Lola- I always jump for joy when I see you blog come up on my blog list. I LOVE LOVE LOVE these posts. (I may have mentioned that before.)

And then to find out I've won an award. Yippee!

I wasn't going to do Nano this year, but I may change my mind. I think I might just have about 50K words left on my new WIP, so I'll probably sign up after all.

Great tips by the way on preparing. I think PBJ may become the meal of the month.

Lisa Potts said...

I love your posts, Lola.

We're already buddied up for NaNo and I'm so glad that someone else's point a. to point b. looks the same as mine, although I'll admit to being a bit sick to my stomach thinking about it.

PS - Where do those mermen hide their packages?

Candyland said...

Oh man! I'm in love with you, too!!! Good luck with NaNo. You'll do great! And now I need a shower so ideas can flourish:)

Lola Sharp said...

You, my delightful friends, are the best.

Thank you for always stopping by and leaving the most wonderful comments.

I feel so blessed and honored.

And still...I wonder...where do the merpeople hide their 'junk'? How does that work?

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

I am doing NaNo. Wife has been warned and we're going to a friend's house for Thanksgiving.
Your way looks complicated...

Kimberly Franklin said...

Love your NaNo plan. Sounds perfect! I've been thinking hard about doing it this year. I really need too! Thanks for the funny post! It totally made my day! :)

Good luck!

Anne R. Allen said...

Excellent NaNo tips. I'd suggest skipping Thanksgiving altogether and have your sig. other/some relative bring you a doggie bag. Think of all those icky political discussions you can avoid! Say you're sick. It's the NaNo virus.

Love the pictures. Especially "the easy way/my way" That's my way to have a career.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I hope you'll stop by again. I think you'll see some mutual friends.

And best of luck with NaNo! I can't do it because I've got an actual paying writing job to finish, but I'll be with you in spirit.

Ellie said...

Thanks for the nano tips! I'm stocking up, baking, and cleaning like mad in preparation. LOL.

Pk Hrezo said...

LOL! That was a masterpiece of a post! I love it! The pics were great. And thanks for the tips... I will so need them as this is my first NaNo... but I ain't scared.
My story is called Sapphire and I'm anxious to write it. I'll look for you to add to my buddy list. I'm under pkhrezo.

ready to roll! thanks for the awesome pics!! :)

Jeff King said...

Wow... thats a lot to take in. nice work.

good luck with NaNo

Sara B. Larson said...

ha ha, those random thoughts and pictures were awesome! I still haven't decided about NaNoWriMo, it kind of depends on some other stuff that may or may not be happening, and i'm thinking I'm not going to be able to do it. :( I hope you make it! Sounds like you're prepared!

Nicole Zoltack said...

Great post. :) And I so agree about the shower. It just is the best haven for discovering new ideas or scenes or dreaming up new characters...

And I'm doing nano (scarlett9284) My title is Champion of Valor. Can't wait to get started! Oh, and hubby hates November. He's really gonna hate it this year because I'm gonna need his help with the two little ones (2 years and 3 months) otherwise there's no way I'll win.

Jan Markley said...

Hppy Sasquatching in your Sasquatch writing cave! Love the part about the shower, that's where I get my best ideas!

Jemi Fraser said...

I SO want that Godzilla mark!!! Mabye I could use it on the report cards I'm working on!!!

Shannon said...

Loved this post! Great tips! Wish I had time to do NaNo this year but I'd be setting myself up for failure if I tried. I'll be cheering from the sidelines!

Haleine said...

I too had a couple of big WIP revelations in this shower this week. Makes for very soggy but important notes.

Loved your NaNo tips. I am planning on participating this year. I have no title, not even anything as clever as WiP3, and very little in the way of plot but strangely enough, that's more than which I started out last time.

Great post!

Jennie Bailey said...

Lola - thank you, thank you, thank you! Great suggestions and I actually printed them for The Hubster. ;-)

Marieke said...

That such a lovely award! Thank you! :)

And your way would so be my way too :D

kimberlyloomis said...

Haha! Love your NaNo check list. Alas, we always do Thanksgiving at my house (honestly, hubby and I are the best cooks so the feasting holiday we insist upon doing - wouldn't you?) and with a two year old running around... I shudder to think of the frustration of trying to do NaNo with him around. Pretty sure neither of us would survive. Okay, he probably would but my body would be found underneath this toy car he likes to ride.

Good luck, Lola!

Hart Johnson said...

You've discovered the secret, but TOTALLY misinterpretted! Lola, the secret isn't the SHOWER, it is being NAKED! I've been telling y'all for months! Always suprises me that so few people believe me.

Great NaNo plans! I haven't informed my family because... erm... I'm not talking to my husband at the moment. But i have a deadline in December that I am totally on top of and my agent will have, so if he grumbles, I am saying I'm on deadline *shifty* (it's true... I am just misleading about what the deadline is)...

Ann said...

Your journey from A to B is overly familiar to me in all aspects of my life. Delighted to know I have company.

I am not doing Nano for all the reasons you listed. I did toy with the idea and had an idea but the timing is off for me.

Great tips though. Wishing you every success with it. I will be cheering from the sidelines!

Jenny Beattie said...

Ahhh. Your blog's lovely. Good luck with Nano. One year I will do it...

Jon Paul said...

I'm intentionally or unintentionally breaking some of your rules just to keep Nano edgy--but it'll be a blast anyway!

LAST ONE TO THE FINISH LINE IS ROTTEN EGG! :D

Terresa said...

Love the Savage Chicken humor, it's much needed this week especially, with 101 family parties, school parties and Halloween costumes to create.

About NaNo, I'm still on the fence about it, waffling you might say. Enjoyed your prep list!

xoxo,
Terresa

Lisa said...

I'm doing NaNo, too... I like your ideas for getting ready :)

What did you think of Rocky Horror Glee? I liked it (but then again, I love every episode of Glee)>

Lola Sharp said...

Lisa, I enjoyed the episode very much. And I too love every episode of Glee. I never thought I would, but the writing is just too hilarious not to love. (and Brittany S. Pierce's deadpan delivery slays me.)

Thanks, friends, for stopping by. :)

Susan Tiner said...

Those are some hot boys you've got there Lola.

Maybe merpeople have something going on like vampires sucking blood instead of having sex?

Your outlining method looks very creative.

Janet said...

Great tips for NaNo as I gear up to lose my virginity (NaNo Virginity - let's not talk about the other one). And I snorted at the path your writing takes from A to B, Lola - good thing I wasn't drinking anything :)

Lydia Kang said...

I love the drawing of "your way" of writing. Love it! I think I'm a lot like that too. I love the homage to Quinn's nails. I'm not the only fan, I see!

Carolina Valdez Miller said...

Awesome tips! I think the key is to have the support of your loved ones. And yes, probably shouldn't do Thanksgiving. I won't be doing Nano this year like I'd planned because I have to do my revisions. But, I'm totally behind you! You can do it! Perhaps you can get your revisions done by the weekend? Or are you putting them on the back burner for a bit?

Love me some Cam. Thank you. That pic will get me through the night. :D

Jai Joshi said...

Good luck with Nano, I loved your tips!

I wouldn't mind swimming with that merman lookig guy.

Hey yes! I get my inspiration in the shower too. Great place to work out plot tangles. Har, loved your diagram of The Easy Way and My Way!

I write like you :)
But I'm hoping to work up to a more straightforward A--->B.
No NaNo :(

Hi, Lola! Thanks for finding my blog. I'm following yours now too and I love it! I already LOL a few times, which is always good (the mermaid guy rocks). I am not doing Nano this year. But I wish you the best of luck - you have a great plan lined up!

Susan Fields said...

I won't be doing NaNo this year, just trying to get through this latest (last???) round of revisions. Good luck to you!

Patricia A. Timms said...

Okay, so it took me all day to finally get here and I wish it hadn't so I could have said THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the award, earlier. :)

You've been a great blogging friend. I just made you a buddy for NaNo, I'm PatriciaTimms if you want to buddy back.

I'm a first time NaNo'er and very excited. November 6th I'm attempting my 16-hour cushion building write-athon. I will be using LiveStream so bloggers can check it out (let's see how many kinks I can get with that. ha!)

Title for NaNo is The Game Maker's Apprentice.

M Pax said...

Good luck with nanomo. Did I get that right? I'll be revising.

Your drawing of outlining made me laugh. I'm like that, too, but working towards something straighter,

fairyhedgehog said...

I feel so excited about Nano after reading this! You write so breathlessly and I'm caught up in it!

Thanks for visiting my blog. I did do some Nano tips but mine were more for during Nano!

Oh, and if you like tasty men you might want to pop back into my blog on Saturday!

Sorry, this wasn't meant to be spam! Oh, and I've buddied you on Nano. I can't wait to start but I wonder how long that will last!

Ishta Mercurio said...

I must remember never, ever, ever to drink any beverage whatsoever while reading your blog, for fear of spewing it all over the keyboard and ruining my computer.

Pure awesome. You totally deserve those blog awards.

And my best NaNo tip is to go into it with as clear an idea of where your novel is headed as possible. Also, if you can squeeze in a speed-typing class ahead of time, it can't hurt.

Liz said...

I definitely agree - shower is the place of thoughts and decision making! I've worked out lots of little plot problems there. :)

Thanks for the great NaNo tips!

Talli Roland said...

Hahaha - loved that photo of the merman! I wonder where his package is, too? Where do they put that thing?

Thanks for posting The Hating Game on your sidebar! :) Yay! Much appreciated!

I'm not doing NaNo this year, but your tips come in handy for me all year round. I really need to clean!

Eric W. Trant said...

I'll be trying NaNo, but no commits. I'll write, sure, but we have a baby due Nov 19.

Now, if I can manage to get through the month with a new baby and STILL bank 50kw, well, anybody can do it, right.

- Eric
