A Little Rain Must Fall... and Gratitude

Friends, it's finally raining! Huzzah!
(I can almost hear the thirsty trees guzzle and gulp then sigh in relief...wipe their chins.)

...has never written in the rain

Rainy days = lovely writing weather!

Since it's supposed to rain through Friday, I'm going to hunker down, drink coffee and retreat back into my writing cave for the next several days. (MUST FINISH REVISIONS.)

But, before I hole up and disappear for a while into my rainy place, I have a few delightful 'things' to share with you...

source: http://fhrankee.deviantart.com/art/exploded-feelings-98953748

First up, these kind and wonderful writer friends have recently gifted me with blog awards:

Ann @ Inkpots and Quills
Kenda Turner
Deniz Bevan @ The Girdle of Melian
Kittie Howard

I am grateful and honored. THANK YOU.
I hope you will visit all of them... say hello.

And because I am inspired by music (I 'almost always'* write to music) and to pay homage to the rain finally falling and relieving our drought...

This song drives me to my knees. One of my favorite songs of ALL TIME. (he wrote it when he first met his wife. dude, can you imagine?) Gives me goosebumps. Every single time.

Here's another favorite...

And for good measure, here are more rainy day songs:

"Make It Rain," Tom Waits
"It's Been Raining," Kimya Dawson
"Buckets of Rain," Neko Case (covering Bob Dylan)
"Another Rainy Day," Corinne Bailey Rae
"Raining in Darling," Bonnie Prince Billy
"I Wish It Would Rain," the Temptations
"None But the Rain," Townes Van Zandt
"It's Raining," Irma Thomas
"Purple Rain" Prince

And of course:

Do YOU like rainy-day-writing? Do YOU write to music?
(will you forgive me if I disappear for a while to finish these damn revisions?)

*genius writing to be found here. sarcasm.

I've just gone through three months of near continuous rainfall, so am not as charitably disposed towards precipitation as I normally would be. BUT, I have to tell you that is a fantastic quote (the one on the first photograph)

Ellie said...

It's raining her as well and I love it. The LSO is listening to music and I'm writing; a pot of steaming coffee and the heating on. Bliss.

A great post!

Carolyn V. said...

Aw. It's not raining here. I love rainy days! Have fun writing. =)

Piedmont Writer said...

God I love John Hiatt.

It rained here Sun and Mon but the sun is trying to come out. Of course I'm not getting anything done with revisions or finishing the ms. or the short story I'm supposed to be writing because I'm in avoidance mode playing in the blogosphere. Bad girl, very bad girl. xoxox

AlexOngNYC said...

I don't write with music on, but I write with music. When I'm trying to sort out what my characters are going through, I pick a song and picture them singing to me or an audience, so I can really try to feel and hear what they're going through on the inside.

It started raining here yesterday and I was so glad. It has been so hot and dry.

And you're right...perfect writing weather.

~Nicole Ducleroir~ said...

It rained yesterday and I was so happy! Not only did I write, but I wore jeans instead of shorts and made a pot of homemade soup. Unfortunately, by the time it was ready the sun was out, the temps were up, and I had to change back into shorts or sweat through the meal. *sigh* But Fall/Winter is on its way. You can smell it in the mornings.

Happy writing/revising!
((hugs)) Nicole

I couldn't write *without* music! It's lovely to be curled up indoors on a rainy day, reading or writing...

Amy Allgeyer Cook said...

I'm not a rain person, but I do love John Hiatt!! Thanks for the tune!

I always appreciate a little Led:)
Thanks for that!

rainy days are my favorite! especially thunderstorms! (just so long as there are no tornados!!)

Lickety Splitter said...

Rain was a mighty welcome event here Sunday night, but not so much the fallen tree limbs on Monday morning. But, that's okay. The much needed rain was totally worth the headache of that mess.

Music seems to help my synapses do their job when I'm blogging or writing poetry!

Quinn said...

I love rainy days when I don't have to go out in them. But I always want to just stay in bed and watch movies all day when it's raining ... not really conducive to writing.

Right now though, I'm tired of the rain. It's been literally raining all summer here in Korea. Day in, day out ... rain. I'm sick of it. It finally just stopped last week. I'm so happy.

Colene Murphy said...

Can't love rain more! Love to sleep when it's raining. Love fires in the fireplace during cold rain. love to read and write in the rain. Guuuush about rainy days!

N. R. Williams said...

I love rain. In Colorado, it doesn't rain enough. I love music too and if my player worked I'd write to it, but it would have to be instrumental or I'd sing.

I look forward to the rainy season here in sunny CA -- not really a big fan of sun and heat. Good luck with those revisions!

Falen (Sarah Ahiers) said...

heck yeah i listen to music while writing. It freaks me out that some poeple don't

Jeff King said...

I normally like rainy days, it just depends on my mood.

And again I write to music if the feeling strikes me, or I need some inspiration.

Hannah Kincade said...

I'm with Sarah, it freaks me out when people don't write to music. Weirdos.

I loooooove rain!! It's one of my most favorite things EVER!! It has been raining quite a bit here and causing some flooding, which is sad and I'm lucky that it doesn't affect me or my daily life. Prayers to those it is!

This is my favorite time of year because I can just curl up on the couch with a mug of tea and write to my heart's content. :D

Have a great day!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

I like rainy days - I don't have to go out and do yard work when that happens.
And I always listen to music when I write.

JEM said...

I looooove rainy weather, but not so much when I'm stuck at work instead of curled up on my couch at home with a hot cup of java and my laptop. Sigh, we can't always get what we want...

The Golden Eagle said...

I love rain! It just was a few hours ago and I didn't mind walking through it at all. :D

I don't tend to write and listen to music at the same time; if I do, it's because my writer's block is absolutely killing me and if that, it's mostly classical. Words just get me confused.

Old Kitty said...

I'd add It's raining men by the Weather Girls!

Anyhooo - rain is fine if I'm not walking to work at dawn fighting my brolley as it tries not to turn up against the wind.

Rain is also fine when I'm all snuggle indoors - with my cat and all the time in the world!

Good luck with your revisions!!! See you soon!!

Take care

Kenda said...

Rain on an old metal roof--that's pretty good music, too. And splashing in the puddles under an umbrella. Thanks for stirring some fond memories! And good luck on the revisions...

Jennifer Shirk said...

It's raining here too! Yes, I was so productive today (writing-wise)and I think it was because it was raining. :)
But no, I don't write to music. But I may listen to a song or two before I write.

Elizabeth Briggs said...

I wish it was raining! Yesterday it was 113 and it was too hot to do anything. Yuck.

Dominique said...

It rained pretty hard where I am today. Guess it had to eventually, because the clouds have been musing with the idea for days. Thanks for reminding me it's good writing weather. Puts a nice spin on getting soaked. :)

For nice rain related music, I recommend Rain by Patty Griffin.

Robert Guthrie said...

Living in the Pacific northwest, I'm kinda happy that today is sunny.

But rain, a scone, tea... great for writing.

We finally got some rain yesterday too. WOW

Love the song by John Hiatt.

I adore writing in the rain, and it's doing that very thing here right now. Hopefully I'll have a productive few days!

Valerie Geary said...

There's really nothing quite like writing in the rain. Sigh. Well, except for napping in the sun. Hmmm...do I have to decide which I like better?

Elisabeth Black said...

I love those photos, and I adore writing in the rain.

It finally rained here. And now it's cool. It was a long, hot, dry summer and I'm glad it's mostly over.

The heat from revision hell blazes on.

Thank you for some great music!

I like the rain too! It always makes me think of the Carpenters Rainy Days & Mondays :)

Carolina Valdez Miller said...

I love love rainy days, especially if I have someone to cuddle with me. But they're great writing days, too.

I'm curious, though, how long it took you to compile such a rainy day list? It's awesome!

I like your take on a rainy day. You'd love this picture book. It's beautiful:

This humidity is terrible for my hair!

I do like writing on dreary days.
Loved the acoustic Led Zep!
Other rain songs: November Rain by Guns n Roses. Another Rainy Night by Queensryche. I Love a Rainy Night by Eddie Rabbit. Rainy Days and Mondays by the Carpenters.
But my oldest son likes to play "Raining Blood" by Slayer on his guitar!
My fave is Purple Rain.

Neurotic Workaholic said...

I usually write at Starbucks, which always plays good music. I like it when they play Norah Jones, because there's something about her voice that's soothing but not distracting.

Jennie Bailey said...

Love love love rainy day writing! But, alas, I'm in SoCal so we rarely get those lovely rainy writing days. I do the same when we do - hunker down with coffee and write, write, write! Enjoy! And good luck with those revisions!

Ooh I love rainy days!!

I have an award for you on my blog, do pop over when you can. ;)

Just wanted to let you know that I gave you an award on my blog.

Samantha Vérant said...

Lola- I can't, can't, can't write to music, but I'm often inspired by a tune or lyrics. I also need complete silence when I sleep. And darkness.

For more good measure: here comes the rain again --- eurhythmics.

Laura Marcella said...

I'm most productive when it's sunny! Sunshine gives me a happiness and energetic boost. Rain makes me sleepy; all I want to do is curl up on the couch with a blanket and a good book! So I'm happy to say after 3 days of rain the sun is finally showing his happy face so I can get more work done!

Sometimes I must have music to write and sometimes I need quiet. It depends on my mood!

Good luck with your revisions and enjoy the rain!!!

Hart Johnson said...

I pretty much always love the rain. I used to love running in the rain, but my damn knees hate the running. Walking in the rain isn't QUITE as satisfying, but still nice, as long as it isn't below 50.

Though I confess when I lived in Portland, I could get tired of lack of sunshine... it wasn't a rain disgust, but a gray disgust. I prefer a place that it rains for a couple hours then gets nice, instead of a drizzle all day place.

And yes, I love hunker down at home weather of any sort if I can figure out how to make my family go away. Hard to write when they are all inside on top of me.

Tara said...

Write to music - me? Nevah ;) We were drowned on Sunday and Monday, Tues was gorgeous, but we're back to rain again this morning...

Meredith said...

Yay for rain! I'm always more productive and happy when it's raining and I'm cozy inside. Love those pictures!

I used to enjoy a good rain (before our basement flooded [twice]), but now it just brings acid up my esophagus...I used to sit on the veranda with my laptop, a pile or research, pen and paper and write in a gentle rain...maybe I will one day again....we will see. The rain and I will have to develop trust again. Trust that it will stay outside...

Amie B said...

thanks for finding my blog!

i'm thankful for the rain, too! i have a deadline looming and i'm not too happy that being sick has made me scramble to complete my revisions. at least now i won't have to be bummed that i'm missing beautiful sunny days.

Lola Sharp said...

Meredith--OH! You just reminded me of another great rain song by Garbage...
*•♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸I'm only happy when it rains..•♪♫•*

Sharon--I hope you've worked out a sump pump/dry basement fix. :( You and rain had a bad break-up. I hope you become friends again. :)

Samantha--Yes, I am remiss. That is a great song!

EVERYONE-- Trust me, I LOVE sunny days! ☼
I'm a sun worshipping, layer-outer (I know, no lectures)...but there's a lot of glare on the laptop outside in the sun...and being inside writing when it's sunny is hard for me to do.
Soo, as Amie just said--when it's raining (or snowing) it's nice to be inside and write, without feeling guilty about needing to be outside. :)

Plus we've had the longest, hottest, driest summer on record here. Crispy.

And for those of you needing sun, because you've been living through days/weeks/months of rain (which would be depressing. The Pac NW would slay me)...
I wish you lots of ☼ sunshine!

And, last, but NOT least (in fact, MOST!):

I adore you all. ♡

THANK YOU for being so delightful and always coming by here and leaving the best, smartest, funniest comments.

Best of luck with revisions! I'm trying to get done with mine by next month but... I don't know any more... More rain may help.

Lola, thanks so much for stopping by my blog, and for your insightful comment. I love what you said about antagonists...sometimes it's the protagonist themselves, sometimes it's not even a person. So very true!

As for rainy days, it's my favorite time to write. Thunder boomed near our home today, windows open, raining outside, pretty cool stuff.

Good luck with those revisions! Or if they're done already, you go girl!

Have an excellent weekend.

Rainy days are great for utilizing a different type of energy, more mental energy.

Nate Wilson said...

Rainy day writing, rainy day movie-watching, rainy day board-game-playing, they're all good. Though I suppose only the first is at all productive (which explains why I do the other two so often).

I sometimes listening to music while writing, but only when the words are flowing. If they're not, I either have to switch to lyricless songs, or turn it off altogether.

Oh, and here's one more for your list: Blind Melon's "No Rain."

The Words Crafter said...

mmmmmmmm....I love rainy days!!!! It's the best thing for creativity, maybe more than music. And that's saying something! Loved the LedZep tune. Never heard that one before!

We've had a ton of rain her this summer (usually v. dry). Rainy days are good for writing. I can only write to the sound of silence! Happy writing!

Alison Stevens said...

Well, here's yet another award for you. :)

I love the rain. I love the smell, the way it brings out the colors in the plants, and the sound of the tapping on the window. It makes for perfect writing weather. I also love music, but I can only listen to instrumental pieces while I write. I'm too easily distracted by the lyrics. :)

Patricia A. Timms said...

I love the rain but we don't get enough of it where I live. I enjoyed the rainy day music. I cannot live without music. My life is so much better now that Pandora is in the mix.

I see that Alison sent you and award. I love her. I gave you the same award on my blog. I just love your posts.
